DC Revives Boy Thunder: Meet Team Thunder in Supergirl #12! (Superman's New Sidekicks?) (2026)

4 Years Later, DC Comics Revives Its Coolest Superman Idea (With a Twist)

DC Comics has a knack for bringing back fan-favorite characters, and their latest move involves a character who hasn't been seen in a while: Boy Thunder, also known as David Sikela. This character, introduced in the Batman/Superman: World’s Finest series, had a short but impactful run. Boy Thunder was a unique take on Superman's sidekick, with a backstory that involved surviving a dead universe and possessing powers under Earth's sun. However, his story took a dark turn when he ended up on Earth-22, becoming the violent anti-hero Magog.

Now, DC is giving Boy Thunder a second chance, albeit in a different form. In the pages of Supergirl #12, a team of clones known as Team Thunder is introduced. These clones, Thundergirl, Thunderlad, and Thunderkid, are grown from Boy Thunder's DNA and Kim-Da's genetic material. They are designed to possess powers under Earth's sun, similar to Superman, and are presented as a potential solution to Supergirl's troubles.

The story takes an interesting turn when the Black Flame, a young Kryptonian rebel, attacks Supergirl. In the heat of the battle, Kim-Da unleashes Team Thunder, who are eager to kill the Black Flame. This raises the question: is DC giving Boy Thunder a second chance through these clones? It's a fascinating twist, especially considering the current Superboy-focused period in the Superman line.

One thing that stands out is the potential for a new Boy Thunder among these clones. While it's a neat nod to the past, it also raises the possibility of a half-clone of the original Boy Thunder becoming the new hero. This idea is not out of the realm of possibility, given the wild swings already seen in the Reign of the Superboys event. With Superboy-Prime on a redemption tour and Jon Kent taking on a new identity, it's an exciting time for Superman fans.

However, it's important to note that Supergirl is the focus of this issue, and Campbell might not want to shift too much attention away from Kara. Nevertheless, the introduction of Team Thunder and the potential for a new Boy Thunder is a refreshing development. It's a testament to DC's ability to breathe new life into old ideas, and I hope it leads to something bigger for the Superman line.
