Glyndon School Lockdown: DGF Families React to Hallway Closure (2026)

A sense of unease gripped the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (DGF) school community on March 3rd when two of its schools were abruptly placed under temporary hallway closure. This decision, triggered by the presence of an individual of concern near the district, led to a swift and visible law enforcement response in Glyndon.

Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting assured the public that there was no direct threat to any school, and law enforcement successfully made contact with the individual involved. However, the identity of this person and the specific circumstances that led to the closure remain undisclosed by the sheriff's office.

Superintendent Shannon Hunstad addressed the incident in a letter to DGF families, emphasizing that students and staff remained secure throughout and that classes continued uninterrupted. Hunstad confirmed that the buildings are now secure and that normal operations have resumed.

But here's where it gets controversial... the lack of information provided to families during the incident left many feeling anxious and confused. Kari Schjerveim, a grandparent with students at both affected school sites, expressed her concerns. "You just know they're on lockdown, but you don't get any more details," she said, highlighting the uncertainty that parents and caregivers faced.

Schjerveim's anxiety was heightened by having grandchildren in both buildings, making the situation even more worrying. "It's really scary not knowing what's happening, especially when you have a child in elementary school too," she added.

While the superintendent's letter offered some reassurance, it didn't alleviate all concerns. Schjerveim noted, "Not knowing the specifics is really hard."

This incident raises important questions about the balance between security measures and the need for timely and transparent communication with families and the community. How can schools and law enforcement better manage these situations to provide clarity and ease concerns?
