The hot seat at Manchester United is heating up! With the recent departure of Amorim, the club is on the hunt for a caretaker manager to steer the ship until the end of the season. Two familiar faces, Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, are reportedly leading the charge. Both former players, with experience managing the Red Devils, are set to discuss the role with the club's top brass. But here's where it gets interesting...
Could they work together? It's not out of the question! Carrick was a key part of Solskjaer's coaching staff when he stepped in after Jose Mourinho's departure in 2018. This dynamic duo could potentially bring a sense of stability and familiarity to the team.
Meanwhile, Darren Fletcher, currently managing United's Under-18s, has also been considered for the role. He's stepping in as interim manager until a caretaker is appointed and will lead the team in their upcoming Premier League match against Burnley on Wednesday at 20:15 GMT. Another potential contender is ex-United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The club plans to announce a permanent successor to Amorim in the summer. But what about the current situation? One player hinted to BBC Sport that the caretaker role might be shared among several candidates, or even that Fletcher could stay on if the next two matches go well.
Solskjaer's initial appointment in 2018 followed a similar pattern when Mourinho was sacked. He then took the reins full-time for three years before being dismissed in November 2021. Carrick also had a brief three-game stint as temporary boss after Solskjaer's dismissal before leaving the club in December 2021. Carrick has been out of work since being sacked by Championship club Middlesborough last June after two-and-a-half years in charge. Solskjaer was sacked by Turkish club Besiktas in August.
And this is the part most people miss... Potential candidates for the permanent role are already emerging. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi (now at Marseille) are reportedly in the early mix. When asked about the link, Glasner simply stated, "I am Crystal Palace manager and it makes no sense for you to ask me any more questions about it."
