Target's Big Move: Revitalizing a Northern Suburb Shopping Center (2026)

Get ready for a major transformation in the far northern suburbs! A giant new Target is set to take over a long-abandoned eyesore, bringing life and excitement to the community.

The former Super K-Mart store, which has been vacant for nearly a decade, is about to undergo a significant revitalization project. Round Lake Beach Mayor Scott Nickles announced the exciting news, expressing his delight at finally seeing progress after years of effort.

This 190,000-square-foot property, located at Rollins Crossing Shopping Center, has been a source of frustration for the community. But now, Target has stepped in to acquire the property and breathe new life into the area.

But here's where it gets controversial... Target plans to demolish the existing building, which has been deteriorating. While some may see this as a necessary step for progress, others might argue that it's a shame to lose a piece of history. What do you think? Should old buildings be preserved, or is it better to make way for modern developments?

The village had previously taken legal action to condemn the property, but Target's acquisition put an end to that process. The deal was finalized late last year, and now we're eagerly awaiting the next steps.

And this is the part most people miss... the Rollins Crossing Shopping Center has already undergone some changes. In 2025, it was sold to a national real estate firm, and the marketing materials revealed some interesting tenants. LA Fitness and Petco were among the recent additions, and there's also a vacant Regal Cinema Movie Theater. The village has big plans for that space, too, with a proposed 72,000-square-foot entertainment center in the works.

Mayor Nickles envisions Rollins Crossing becoming a vibrant retail hub for the community. He believes they're on the cusp of making this vision a reality.

So, what do you think of this revitalization project? Are you excited for the new Target, or do you have mixed feelings about the changes? Let's discuss in the comments and share our thoughts on this controversial yet exciting development!
